The original J esus Christ Superstar has little to do with The Phantom Of The Opera or Chess it united current or future members of leftfield London bands such as the Grease Band, Soft Machine and Fairport Convention. With this release, we take you back to a time when these bastions of the establishment were strictly underground, working with the cream of progressive rock at London’s Olympic Studios. It made the name of its young composers, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Within three years of its release in September 1970, it had spawned a Broadway and West End phenomenon, a London cast album and a box-office smash Hollywood film, and influenced many different rock operas that were to follow in its wake. On 8573250 he conducted string music with the English Chamber Orchestra – it was a Gramophone Choice recording and a Classic FM CD of the Week. Gramophone wrote: “Julian Lloyd Webber brings an especially sensitive ‘voice’ to the Barjansky-Stradivarius cello…in the subtle changes of register and tone he lends to his own arrangements (all bar three), with the legerdemain of John Lenehan’s delicate accompaniments.” This box consists of 4 previously released discs:Ĩ572902 was called Evening Songs with music by Delius and Ireland was Classic FM CD of the Week. His conducting prowess is shown by supremely sensitive performances of English string music. He evokes the lyricism of the songs of Frederick Delius and John Ireland with rich expressivity, adapts a selection of music from Monteverdi to Arvo Pärt for the combination of two cellos, and crafts new and exciting Vivaldi arrangements. In this retrospective of his art he can be heard as soloist, arranger and conductor.
